This is a modular course and participants can sign up for all, or part, of the course. The Modules are:

Day 1Module 1 – 24 April 2017 – 9.30 am – 4.00 pm – Planning an effective teaching sequence for fiction in Year 3 and Year 4 

Day 2 – Module 2 – 4 May 2017 – 9.30 am – 12 .30 pm – Teaching poetry, non-fiction and reading and writing across the curriculum 

Day 2 – Module 3 – 4 May 2017 – 1.15 pm – 4.30 pm – Phonics and Spelling in Year 3 and Year 4

Day 1Module 1 – 24 April 2017 – 9.30 am – 4.00 pm – Planning an effective teaching sequence for fiction in Year  3 and Year 4 

The first day will feature a five phase teaching sequence with a quality text at the heart. It will cover engaging prediction and shared reading activities. It will show, in context, how texts can be used to support the teaching of text structure, punctuation and grammar and will examine the planning, drafting, editing and publishing of writing. There will be a free copy of The Matchbox Diaries for all attendees to take away with them. If colleagues from Year 3 and Year 4 attend, there will be an alternative book for Year 3 teachers.

A key part of the day will be to show how we can prepare children for their SPaG, and reading tests in Year 6 by introducing test question formats to children in a variety of contexts.

Day 2 – Module 2 – 4 May 2017 – 9.30 am – 12 .30 pm – Teaching poetry, non-fiction and reading and writing across the curriculum 

This module will examine similar teaching sequences for poetry and non-fiction (including reading and writing across the curriculum) and again demonstrate how engaging techniques can support comprehension, SpaG and writing. Again, test question techniques will be integrated.

Day 2 – Module 3 – 4 May 2017 – 1.15 pm – 4.30 pm – Phonics and Spelling in Year 3 and Year 4

Many children in Year 3 and Year 4 have gaps in their phonic knowledge and have difficulty with spelling. This module will cover subject  knowledge for phonics and spelling in lower KS2 and show how engaging activities can be differentiated for all ability groups.

This module will also feature an active Tagtiv8 phonics and spelling workshop with guest presenter and company founder Bryn Llwewllyn. Some teaching methods might not be working for selected children and this active approach may be just what they need. More information can be found here:
