Challenging the More Able in Reading:further information

What the session will look like

This very practical half day course will look at how our more able readers can be challenged within the normal classroom context. We will examine how the language for effect and themes and traditions strands of the national curriculum can be used to extend the thinking of these children.

Language for Effect and Themes and Traditions strands

The BIRD approach (Broadening – Independence – Reflection  – Deepening) will be used to provide a framework for challenge.

Broadening and Reflection  by looking for themes in the works of an author

Some of the activities can be used with adult led higher ability guided reading groups but most are designed to to be used independently by these children.

Reading challenge cards to develop independence

Although designed for the more able, many of the ideas we will cover can be used by most children at their own level.
