Retrieve and record information / identify key details from fiction and non-fiction.
Resources: An appropriate text for the age and experience of the children. Possibly highlighters too.
Method:
Skimming – ask children to skim through the text by reading quickly to get the basic idea – set a time limit of perhaps one or two minutes and then ask them to give an overview of the text. Is is fiction/non-fiction – what sort of fiction/non-fiction is it? How do you know?
Scanning – as above with a time limit but this time looking for specific things – numbers in the text/characters’ names/verbs etc. What clues does this information give us about the text to help us to comprehend it and answer test questions.
