A lack of fluency is often a restricting factor in developing confidence and comprehension.
‘Fluent reading supports comprehension because pupils’ cognitive resources are freed from focusing on word recognition and can be redirected towards comprehending the text.’ EEF
This twilight will explore how bridges can be built between phonics and decoding, reading fluency and comprehension. We will also examine how this approach can support home/blended learning in the current situation and in future.
The session will cover the following:
- How a whole class reading sequence can be adapted to allow fluency practice at home and school in live and recorded lessons
- Identifying the aspects of the sequence that are particularly suitable for home learning
- A suggested routine for modelling fluency, echo reading, repeated re-reading and performance reading
- Some suggested texts for practising these routines in KS1 and lower and upper KS2
- A simple structure for practising retrieval and inference suitable for home learning
- Resources to support the above that can be used at home and in school
- Examples of children’s work in reading journals
