This course forms part of the ‘New (or not) to…’ series of courses based upon the use of quality texts. This is now a two day course to recognise the emphasis given to the use of texts across the curriculum in PSED and Understanding the World especially.

The sessions have been fully updated to include recommendations from the recent Dfe document ‘The Reading Framework: teaching the foundations of literacy’.

This is an online course delivered via Zoom. The two free books will be be delivered to delegates before the course. The presentation will be available to download at least 24 hours before each day. There will also be downloadable resources that will be needed to fully participate in sessions.

Target audience: Reception teachers who are new to the year group, or experienced teachers who are looking for new ideas and a structured approach to teaching using high quality texts within the new framework.

Day 1 Outcomes: Participants will be introduced to a range of ideas using quality texts to stimulate in-depth engagement with fiction, non-fiction and poetry. We will look at ideas for writing in provision, using children’s interests to develop their vocabulary, spoken  language, reading and writing. There will also be an exploration of how links can be made with the wider curriculum including Physical Development and Understanding the World.

There will be a free copy of two quality fiction texts – There is no Dragon in this Story  and The Suitcase for all attendees as well as access to free online resources including teaching sequences for the featured texts.

Day 2 Outcomes: Delegates will be introduced to texts and practical ideas to be used to enrich the curriculum in PSED and Understanding the World including People and Communities, Past and Present and The Natural World. Development Matters says:

‘In addition, listening to a broad selection of stories, non-fiction, rhymes and poems will foster their understanding of our culturally, socially, technologically and ecologically diverse world. … Enriching and widening children’s vocabulary will support later reading comprehension.’
